Nate's Checkup
Nate had a Dr's appointment today. He's gained a TON of weight! He is now 8 lbs 1.4 oz. That's 1 lb 9 oz gained in 10 days. Holy cow. That must be why I've lost so much weight (18 lbs, YAY!!).
On another note...One of Nate's newborn screenings came back abnormal. He has slightly elevated C14:1, which is apparently an enzyme. This elevation could possible indicate a metabolic disorder called Very Long Chain acyl-CoA Dehydrogenase Deficiency (VLCADD). It affects the way the body breaks down fatty acids and hinders the body from using fat to make energy. There are three different types of onsets...infancy, childhood, and adult. If he has ANY of them I pray that it is not the infancy version. This disorder is extremely rare and difficult to explain, so here's a website with info if you're interested.

They re-did his test today, but from what I've found in my research even if it comes back normal additional testing should be performed. To get this additional testing we have to see a geneticist. They gave me info on a geneticist at Emory but mentioned that he is difficult to get in with. If I am unable to get in with him, I found a genetic clinic at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta that I am going to contact.
The Dr today didn't seem concerned at all. She checked his muscle tone, which was normal, and a couple other things. But with all the research I've done, things like poor muscle tone only show up once it's too late. She left it up to me to decide if I wanted to go to the geneticist or not. I however and not going to wait til something happens to take action. Once something happens it's too late.
Hopefully, though, all his tests will come back normal and I won't even have to think about this very long named metabolic disorder ever again.
